Playoff bracket set in WWA

Flamethrower Matt McColloch leads Acuna Matata into the WWA playoffs as the No. 1 seed.

Acuna Matata did what it had to do in the final night of the Westwood Wiffleball Association season to finish atop the standings. It still took an assist from Dargon Hearts to clinch though.

Acuna Matata swept the Yard Goats Thursday and Dargon Hearts split a matchup with Honey Nut Ichiros to settle the top sport in the regular season standings. Acuna Matata finished the season 11-3, while Honey Nut Ichiros was next at 10-4.

Acuna Matata showed its versatility Thursday, winning both a blowout (12-2) and barnburner (1-0) against the Yard Goats.

The shutout victory pushed the team over the top in the standings, as Dargon Hearts beat Honey Nut Ichiros 8-6 in the first game Thursday night. Honey Nut Ichiros came back to win Game 2 of the series 13-12.

The regular season was set to end Sunday, but Ansley’s Children forfeited its matchup with Westwood Gold due to having its whole team out of town.

Now that the whole season has been played, the playoff bracket is set.

The playoffs begin Monday, Aug. 31 with No. 3 Westwood Gold (7-7) and No. 4 Wiffle House (7-7) squaring off at 5:30 p.m. The two teams split their regular-season doubleheader.

A wildcard matchup will follow at 6:30 p.m. with Ansley’s Children taking on the Yard Goats. The winner of the matchup will move on to face Acuna Matata Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

Honey Nut Ichiros will take on Dargon Hearts Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

Playoff games will all be six innings. The league’s World Series (Best-of-3) is set to begin Tuesday, Sept. 8 at 6 p.m.

Games will continue to be played at Wiffly Field beside Westside Baptist Church on S. Chancery Street.
