Athlete of the week: Lauren Slatton- Girls golf

It’s no surprise for people who keep up with Warren County sports that Lauren Slatton would be our athlete of the week. Since she was a freshman in high school, she has been beating many on the golf course. As a freshman, she placed 11th in the state and as a sophomore she placed 6th in the state. You can tell this young and talented golfer has her eyes on the prize. That prize would be a state championship under her belt.

On Monday, Slatton and the rest of the Warren County golf team headed to Cookeville to play in the district tournament. Slatton and Ella Matheny are the only two girls who play for the Pioneers, but a solid performance by Slatton gave them a 2nd place finish at the tournament. Slatton scored a 65, tying her career-low score and winning on the girls side. The girls and boys teams both qualified for the region tournament and will be back in action on September 26th in Cookeville.

Lauren’s scores for the 2022 school year:

August 8 @ Golden Eagle, 70 - 2nd

August 22 @ McMinnville CC, 74- 1st

August 24 @ Willowbrook, 67 - 1st in Red Raider Invitational

August 29 @ McMinnville CC, 71 - 1st

September 1 @ McMinnville CC, 72 - 1st

September 6 @ McMinnville CC, 72 - 1st in Keith Maxwell Invitational

September 8 2 Cumberland Mt., 35 - 1st (9 hole match)

September 13 @ Golden Eagle., 75 - 3rd

September 15 @ White Co CC, 67 - 1st

September 19 @ Golden Eagle, 65 - 1st in District Tournament

As you can see, Slatton’s junior year has just been a continuation of her success from the previous two years. She placed first eight different times throughout the year. She was able to have a season low score of 65 in the district tournament, which is great momentum heading into the region tournament. Slatton will be looking to get back to the state tournament again this year which will be held on October 5th-8th in Sevierville.
