Security Federal Athlete of the Week: Aug. 14-20

Partnering with Security Federal, the Warren County Sports Authority will honor a standout local athlete each week. The WCSA and the Friendliest Bank in Town love seeing great athletic achievement and there are plenty to pick from every week in Warren County. From winter to summer, spring to fall, and on courts, fields, diamonds, dance floors and anywhere else an athlete can succeed, Security Federal and the Sports Authority are going to be on the lookout for the best of the best!

Braylon Grayson, WCHS football

It has become a common question from opposing sidelines. For the last three years when the Pioneers suited up, inevitably somebody was going to ask, “Who is No. 24?” Warren County fans all already know the answer – that’s Braylon Grayson.

Even in defeat last Friday, Grayson was an absolute star. The senior running back and linebacker did all he could for the Pioneers in a crushing 35-34 defeat in Smithville, setting the tone on both sides of the ball in the season opener.

Grayson, already recognized as one of the best pure tacklers in the state after winning the Region 3-6A LB of the Year award last season, finished with 15 stops against DeKalb County. He also added an interception, one that helped set up a touchdown that put the Pioneers in the lead by halftime.

Going to the locker rooms ahead 14-12 wasn’t just because Grayson set the Pioneers up with great field position. He punched in the touchdown as well.

In another stellar offensive outing for the senior, Grayson finished with 48 yards rushing on 13 carries, including his 5-yard TD in the waning moments of the second quarter. Grayson now has 899 career yards rushing, inching him ever closer to the 1,000-yard milestone.

The Pioneers also turned to Grayson through the air in the final minute when they were trying frantically to get into field position. Facing 4th-and-10 and sure defeat in the final 20 seconds if they couldn’t convert the yardage, Grayson caught a screen pass and picked up 15 yards to keep his team alive.

Warren County wasn’t able to rally after the big play, but it won’t be long before the Pioneers are in the win column if they get more efforts like Grayson gave them last week.

The Pioneers will be back in action this Friday, Aug. 26 in Sparta. Warren County and White County will go to battle at 7 p.m. Make sure to follow the WCSA website and social media pages for the latest updates on Pioneer football.
