Lady Eagle Jayla Garibaldi
Morrison knew if it was going to claim a championship in the Morrison Ruritan preseason 7-8 grade tournament, the Lady Eagles would have to win three games in the span of four days. It's a good thing they had point guard Jayla Garibaldi on their side.
Garibaldi capped a dominant week of play by leading the Lady Eagles to a championship over Eastside last Thursday, earning her the Security Federal Athlete of the week. Garibaldi ran a layup line in the second half in the championship. Garibaldi, the tournament MVP, scored 18 of her game-high 23 points in the second half as the Lady Eagles downed Eastside 37-31 in the title tilt.
Garibaldi wasn't just good on the last night either. She proved throughout the week that she was one of the most talented players in the league, even as opposing coaches designed defenses in hopes of stopping the leading lefty.
Garibaldi scored 12 points when the Lady Eagles opened the tournament with a 40-5 victory over the Irving College Lady Tigers. She followed with a game-high 9 points in a 25-21 slugfest against Centertown in the semifinals.
Eastside did all it could in the finals to keep Garibaldi from flying in for lefty layups, but she was able to crank it up in the second half and guide her team to a huge championship.
Morrison will now enter the season as the favorites, only further solidified Monday night as the Lady Eagles opened the regular season with a 50-10 win over Irving College at home.
The 7-8 grade elementary season will run until the last week of January, where a postseason tournament champion will be crowned at Charlie Dalton Gym. Garibaldi and the Lady Eagles already have their sights set on more trophies this season.
