Athletes of the week: Isaac Stefanick and Valery Esparza, Cross Country

This week we are honoring two cross country athletes who have made a huge impact on the team during this school year. Isaac Stefanick and Valery Esparza are two cross country runners who deserve recognition for their efforts this year.

Stefanick is a freshman who has had an amazing season. He has finished first for the Pioneers in each of the meets this season. Coach Anne Myers said about Stefanick leading the way, “As a freshman this is remarkable.”

He has been consistently listed in the top 500 runners in the state based on Milesplit.com stats. His top ranking this season was 380th. He has also been consistently in the top 50 freshman!

He won overall in the Pioneer invitational back in August and placed third overall in the John Freeman Invitational. As the season has progressed he has had many top 10 finishes and continues to improve his time, with a season best 18:21. Coach Myers also said, “Heading into the MSCCA championships this weekend, we are looking for another top finish.”

Esparza has also had a great start to her first season. Like Isaac, she has had many top 10 finishes throughout the season. She has finished top 10 in the John Freeman Invitational and the Coffee County Invitational. Esparza is also ranked in the top 500 runners in the state at the No. 420 spot. Her current season best time is 22:09. Coach Myers said “She is improving consistently and stands to race very well in the MSCCA championship this weekend.”

Good Luck to the WCHS Cross Country team as they head to the MSCCA championship this weekend in Dickson.
