WCHS/WCMS tryout information

Want to be the next Lady Pioneer or Pioneer star? Athletes will get their chance to make their mark next week.

WCHS coaches has began announcing their tryout times for the 2022-23 season, with many teams looking to set their roster next Thursday, May 26. Currently, volleyball, girls soccer, baseball, freshman girls basketball and boys soccer will all be working to put together a successful group for next year.

Baseball and girls soccer will both be holding tryouts Thursday from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Coach Phillip King and the Pioneers are coming off an 18-win season on the diamond, while Kimberly Smith will be making her first choices as new Lady Pioneer coach.

Smith was named the new leader of WCHS soccer earlier this month, taking over after Todd Willmore led the program for 14 years.

Coach Erin Blalock will be setting her Lady Pioneer volleyball roster from 12-2 p.m. at Charlie Dalton Gym. Volleyball is growing in popularity, with over 100 kids showing up to a recent camp at the school. Blalock has done a tremendous job building her program over the last two years, including adding a freshman team for the first time at WCHS.

Blalock is hopeful that she can continue fielding freshman, JV and varsity teams in 2022.

Coach Anthony Lippe and his staff will hold freshman girls basketball tryouts from 2-3:30 p.m. next Thursday. Lippe and the Lady Pioneers are coming off a record-setting season, with the WCHS varsity team winning 24 games and earning their first victory in the region tournament since 1979. Warren County will be looking to bring together all the former stars for the Eastside Bulldogs, Morrison Eagles, Irving College Tigers, Dibrell Wildcats and Centertown Warriors, along with kids coming up from WCMS.

Lippe is also holding a the WC Elite basketball camp for boys and girls K-8 grade on May 26-28. Thursday’s camp time is 4-6 p.m., while the event will be from 12-2 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The cost of the camp is $50 for three days, which includes a camp shirt.

WCHS boys soccer will also set its roster next Thursday, with coach August Palombo holding tryouts from 6-8 p.m. at the school soccer field. Next year’s squad will be Palombo’s second team as he made his coaching debut in 2022.

Warren County High School athletic director Todd Willmore noted that more tryout dates will be set in the coming days. Boys basketball tryouts will likely be announced when the school hires its new coach, which could happen in the next 7-10 days.

Coach Matt Turner is encouraging any current high school student who would like to play football in 2022 to contact the coaching staff as soon as possible. The Pioneers will be wrapping up spring practice next Monday, May 23 with a ‘Suds and Rinse’ scrimmage. Fans are asked to bring bottled water and laundry detergent as an admission ticket.

The game was originally scheduled for Friday, but coach Turner moved the game to allow Pioneer Nation to support the Lady Pioneer softball team in sectionals at Stewarts Creek High School. The location of the scrimmage will be determined this weekend (Nunley Stadium may not be able to be used as graduation setup begins Saturday).

Coach Turner also plans to have a camp for upcoming WCHS freshmen in the coming weeks. More information on football’s plans will be released on the WCSA Facebook and Twitter pages, along with on the WCSA Podcast (sponsored by Ben Lomand Connect).
